Why a PeopleSoft Selective Adoption Strategy is a Must
By: Derek Tomei
What Is PeopleSoft Selective Adoption?
Selective Adoption is the new methodology that came along with PeopleSoft 9.2 and the PeopleSoft Update Manager, also known as PUM, allows you to selectively apply PeopleSoft fixes and new features when you want them.
Due to this new Selective Adoption model, PeopleSoft 9.2 is the last version and a full application upgrade is no longer required once you are on this version. In a world without application upgrades, your PeopleSoft system becomes agile.
Building Your PeopleSoft Selective Adoption Strategy
With Selective Adoption, updates are frequent and new PeopleSoft features and maintenance are easy to apply using the PeopleSoft Update Manager and the change assistant. The work that used to go into planning an upgrade now happens multiple times throughout the year as a normal part of updating and maintaining the system.
The best part is that you're in control of when and how you apply fixes and new features and you decide what to apply and when to apply them. If you do not embrace selective adoption you can quickly fall behind. Your applications will become stale and out of date. This means that if you wait for an entire year or longer to get current on fixes and features, you will essentially have to perform work that is equivalent of a PeopleSoft upgrade.
You need to define your Selective Adoption strategy, adjust your schedule, and set your budget for frequent feature and maintenance adoption. These tasks are interrelated. This means that you need to schedule, plan and budget for new feature adoption.
Here are a few tips for a PeopleSoft Selective Adoption Strategy:
- Immediately apply critical (P1) tax, regulatory, and security updates using the latest Update Image.
- Regularly apply scheduled, low-cost, high impact features and fixes. These are small, targeted efforts that require little development time and have a low impact on users.
- Every 12-16 months, update your products to current maintenance levels and take advantage of all the latest new features. When your products are up-to-date, applications run better and future features and maintenance are easier to apply. Choose scheduling that works best for your organization--stagger updates to occur at different times or do them all at once.
- Finally, it is also vitally important to add PeopleTools upgrades to your Selective Adoption Strategy. You should be upgrading PeopleTools every 12-16 months in order to be able to take advantage of all of the features released in new 9.2 images.
